About the WA Science and Engineering Summer School

Poster

The School is the premier, residential science summer school in WA. It is the second School of its kind to be established in Australia - the other being the National Science Summer School in Canberra. Held in January, the School is for students about to start Years 11 and 12.

You will be challenged physically and mentally by the programme's week-long blend of hands on sessions in chemistry, biotechnology, physics, biology, engineering, mathematics, renewable energy, environmental science and mineral science; field trips; keynote lectures and demonstrations by Australia's leading scientists and science communicators - not to mention the recreational pursuits, starting each morning with a session at the beach.

Past keynote speakers have included the following:

  • Dr Ralph Sarich
  • Robyn Williams, ABC Science Show presenter
  • Dr Graham Phillips, "Catalyst" presenter for ABC TV
  • Dr Michael Gore, Past Director of the National Science & Technology Centre, Canberra
  • Dr Fiona Wood, Director of the Western Australia Burns Service
  • Professor Ian Lowe, one of Australia's foremost science commentators
  • Dr Ian MacLeod, Curator of Conservation of the WA Maritime Museum

Murdoch University, which has hosted the School since its foundation, provides all of the teaching faculty - drawn from the Science Faculties.
